Converting letter sizes (S, M, L) to number sizes

Many sport coats, outerwear, walking suits, and casual wear come in letter sizes like small, medium, large, XL, 2X, and so on. Here's how those convert to number sizes:

How jacket and pant sizing works (the "drop")

Our suits are sold as a set — jacket and pants together. The best way to choose a size is by the jacket size, not the pant size, because jackets are difficult to alter while pants are easy to alter.

Pants typically run 6" smaller than the jacket. This is called the "drop." For example, a suit size 46R comes with pants that have a 40" waist.

A 6-inch drop is the industry standard. Keep in mind that most suits need some alterations — adjusting the pant waist is very common. There's usually enough fabric for a tailor to let the waist out up to 2 inches, and most pants can be taken in up to 4 inches without affecting the look. Unless the description says otherwise, all our suit pants are unhemmed, with an unhemmed length of about 38–39 inches.

How to measure your waist and inseam

These measurements apply to both suit pants and individual pants.

Waist: Use a tape measure where your pants will sit — roughly right above your hips. Keep it comfortable, not too tight. There's usually enough fabric for a tailor to let the waist out up to 2 inches, and most pants can be taken in up to 4 inches without hindering the look.

Inseam: We recommend measuring your inseam with shoes on. The inseam is the length of the pants from the crotch to the ankle. Some people prefer their pants longer, others shorter. Common inseam lengths for men are 30, 32, and 34. Unless otherwise stated in the description, all our suit pants are unhemmed, with an unhemmed length of about 38–39 inches.

How to measure for a dress shirt

Fit matters on a dress shirt. Here's how to get it right.

Collar Size: Measure around the base of your neck where your shirt collar sits comfortably. Don't choke yourself out — you want to be able to move your head side to side. You should be able to slide two fingers under the tape when it's closed to know you've got it right.

Sleeve Length: Start at the top (peak) of your shoulder and extend down your arm, past the elbow, to your wrist bone (or wherever you want your cuff to sit). Round up to the nearest half inch.
